The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() In spite of the mountains of criticism against the book, it remained a best seller well into the 19th century. The sexual tension between Ambrosio and this character-along with the eventual revelation of true identity-are an exposé on the topic of same-sex love and makes this work an early contribution to LGBT literature. Lewis also chose to blend the roles of gender in this work-particularly in the character of Rosario/Matilda. The Monk finds itself straddling the genres of Gothicism and Decadence, and includes elements of Romanticism. In fact, the book caused such a scandal that Lewis published another version complete with redactions and entire rewrites so as to remove the shame it had brought upon his family and the political institution of which he was a part. But by the third year, there began a growing criticism of the book and of Lewis mostly on the basis of immorality. When The Monk was first published in 1795, it was received well by readers and reviewers causing a second edition to be printed the following year. It is the old story of the forces of good versus the forces of evil, except that in this one evil comes out ahead. It includes several subplots: rape, torture and incest. Matthew Gregory Lewis's The Monk: A Romance is a story of frustrated and unrequited desire between mentor and pupil mixed with elements of the supernatural. Origin by Jessica Khoury6/12/2023 ![]() When I wasn’t immersed in the beauty of the Rainforest, I was contemplating the secrets and lies that run rampant within it. Then, when you add hidden laboratories and secret experiments, it compels you even further. The jungle is not just the setting, it’s an ambiance with sounds, smells, visualizations that come alive when you’re reading this book. Exotic animals, plants, and cultures create an atmosphere that is both unique and enchanting. I can’t say that I’m very familiar with that part of the world, and I think this fact played a large part in how mesmerizing it was for me. Born and raised in a small secret village, Pia has never left the compound, has never seen anything other than the same old faces, the same old sterile labs and homes… until now.įascinating in itself, this story is told in a wonderfully vivid setting that sets the perfect mood for the reclusiveness of this secret scientific project. ![]() ![]() Reminiscent of Lost, Origin takes place in the Amazon Rainforest where scientists are experimenting, and Pia is their most prized subject. ![]()

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion6/11/2023 ![]() Zombies whose flesh has completely decayed away are known as "Boneys", which act as "pack leaders" of sorts to the others, who are known as "Fleshies" and still retain traces and behaviors from their previous lives as humans, though R explains that most of the behaviors are done out of force of habit rather than an attempt to "live". He cannot remember his name, and refers to himself as "R". The Sentence by Louise Erdrich6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() It was sent to me with a note: ‘This is the book I would take to a deserted island.’” LH: I love how the book opens: “While in prison, I received a dictionary. LH: Tookie steals a fruit van to transport the body and gets uncharacteristically all dressed up to impersonate an eco-undertaker. Tookie simply wanted to do what her bereft friend, Danae, wanted, which was to claim her ex-boyfriend Budgie’s dead body so his current girlfriend couldn’t have it. ![]() LE: I was thinking about how so often when we make big mistakes it’s just because one thing leads to another. ![]() She was convicted of a very strange crime: body snatching. LH: Tookie, who’s Ojibwe, has just been released from prison when she gets hired at the store. LE: Yes, that’s why I wanted to start the store! LH: Like your main character, Tookie, I suspect you, too, think of “book people” as in a class of their own. There’s a sense of community I wanted to share. They love to exchange often-heated opinions about what they’re reading. Louise Erdrich: I feel a kinship with book people. You actually own a bookstore-BirchBark Books-in the Twin Cities. Leigh Haber: You set this novel in an unnamed independent bookstore in Minneapolis. Oprah Daily's Books Director, Leigh Haber, interviewed the beloved author about her latest novel, which is set in a bookstore not unlike the one Erdrich herself owns.except for the ghosts, of course. ![]() |
